November on the Central Coast is one of my favorite times of the year. The weather changes and is a bit more cool making it feel like fall around here. We can finally wear some of those sweaters that have been packed away in the closet.

Fall also means a rush of family photo sessions and I always look forward to it! One of the questions I often get asked as a family photographer is how to get the younger ones ready so I thought I’d share a few tips.

TALK WITH YOUR LITTLES AHEAD OF TIME

If your little ones are old enough to understand, let them know ahead of time you’ll be taking photos as a family and how important it is to you. Make it a fun outing, as a treat after the session and follow up with dinner or dessert. It’ll give them something to look forward to after your session.

FULL BELLIES MAKE FOR HAPPY LITTLES

Everyone (adults too) are much happier when they’re not hungry. If everyone is rested and fed, it helps to start the session with everyone in a good mood. It’s also a good idea to bring a snack and some water to your session.

BRING A FAVORITE TOY FOR THE YOUNG ONES

If your little is too young to follow directions, bringing along a favorite toy or object helps to get their attention.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, HAVE FUN!

This time together is not only meant to capture some beautiful photos of your family, but also for you to make memories and have fun. Give yourself some grace and go with the flow. If your littles want to run and play, then go with it. Or if they just want to be held and not stand on their own, that’s ok too. Every stage of life is different so embrace it. They really do grow too quickly so just enjoy the moment you’re in.
